Netherlands

Known for its tulip-covered fields, historic windmills, buzzing cafe culture and innovative architecture, the Netherlands is a country that’s proud of its past while charging towards the future. For a relatively small country, there are plenty of things to do and places to see in the Netherlands.

As the birthplace of some of the world’s most famous painters, including Rembrant, Van Gogh, Mondrian and MC Escher, it’s artistically and culturally rich. In Amsterdam, culture-seekers will love the Van Gogh Museum, but there’s plenty to see further afield, too: the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, for example, houses the world’s largest collection of Mondrian works.

Architecturally, the Netherlands is no less fascinating. In almost every town and city, including Amsterdam, Delft and Leiden, visitors can wander past the traditional 17th-century Dutch houses that line the canals, or visit some of the country’s more contemporary buildings, such as Amsterdam’s glass and steel Stedelijk Museum, or Eindhoven’s futuristic-looking glass and concrete ‘Blob’, situated in the city’s 18 Septemberplein Square.

The Netherlands’ flat countryside is ideal terrain for even the most amateur of cyclists, with well-maintained bicycle lanes cutting through nearly every town and city. Comprising coastal lowlands, windswept dunes and emerald green fields, the Dutch landscape is always photogenic. But those who choose to visit the Netherlands during the Springtime are in for an extra treat, with tulips decorating the landscape in glorious hues of red, pink, orange and yellow.

Anyone looking to sample Dutch cuisine should look no further than the outdoor market in the nearest city or town. At restaurants, dishes are usually inspired by the Netherlands’ rural landscape, so expect plenty of beef, pork and local cheeses such as Gouda and Edam.

Leonardo Hotels offer stylish accommodation options in a number of Dutch cities. If you’re planning a Netherlands trip, or just searching for where to stay in the Netherlands, find your perfect Netherlands accommodation with Leonardo Hotels.
