Bruges Central



Five years after Corpus ’05 and eight years after Brugge 2002 when Bruges was European Capital of Culture, the city is planning a new large-scale city festival: Bruges Central.

The Bruges Central city festival examines the relationship between Flandres and Central Europe. Flanders has a long tradition of interaction with the countries in that region, as Bruges’ heritage testifies. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 heralded a new chapter in this history. Politically, economically and also artistically, acquaintances were renewed and the reciprocity gathered momentum.

29/10/2010 - 30/01/2011: Van eyck tot Dürer
A prestigious exhibition in the Groeninge Museum on the influence of the Flemish Primitives on the artists in the Holy Roman Empire. For a number of generations Flemish art influenced artistic Europe in the fields of painting, sculpture and illuminated manuscripts to a degree that rivaled the innovations of the Italian Renaissance. The exhibition sheds light on this period with major loans from foreign museums.

22/10/2010 - 23/01/2011: Luc Tuymans: a vision of Central Europe
Contemporary visual art trail - Luc Tuymans, currently one of Belgium’s most influential artists, is the guest curator for Bruges Central. At various locations in Bruges he will present work by Central European artists who have made a name for themselves in their own country and with whom he has an affinity. It will be a contemporary mirror of the historical links between Flandres and Central-Europe.
